In War Thunder, a new feature called spall liner has been introduced in the Air Superiority update. This feature aims to add more detail to combat vehicles and enhance their protection. Spall liner is a part of the structural protection of armored vehicles and is designed to reduce damage in the main compartment when a tank is penetrated. It is made of materials such as aramid fiber and helps to stop part of the fragmentation flow, reducing the damaging effect caused by armor penetration.
In the game, the effect of a spall liner is implemented by adding a module inside the main fighting compartment, imitating the spall liner material. This module has the same size and shape as in real life and provides a protective equivalent of 2 mm of rolled armor alongside the normal armor amount. However, the spall liner has a lower structural strength compared to projectiles fired from tanks, so it gets destroyed once penetrated by a powerful projectile.
When armor is penetrated by a HEAT or APFSDS projectile, secondary fragments are formed with armor penetration ranging from 3 to 30 mm of rolled homogeneous armor. These fragments have different sizes and energies, resulting in a wide variation. In the game, the fragmentation stream consists of several groups of fragments with different angles of expansion, armor penetration, and damage. Fragments with a small angle of deviation from the projectile's trajectory enter the spall liner with a small angle of impact and can travel further into the fighting compartment, potentially damaging tank modules and crew. Fragments with a large deviation hit the lining at a large angle, and even a 2 mm equivalent of spall liner is enough to stop them.
The parameters of the spall liner are set up to slightly reduce the armor effect of powerful APFSDS projectiles and have a more noticeable effect on the damaging effect of HEAT ammo. This aligns with real tests of this protection. It is important to note that the damage model settings have not been changed, and the parameters of the fragmentation field remain the same as before the update. However, an error in the game code was discovered that led to a decrease in the number of secondary fragments for some weapons. This issue has been fixed, and the algorithms for fragments after penetration are now working as intended.
The developers appreciate the feedback regarding the spall liner and issues with fragment penetration and thank the players for their input.
